How to Become More Connected to God

How to Become More Connected to God

Connection is arguably a driving force of humanity. We crave connection with friends, family, and even ourselves. Society prizes connection communities, whether within the confines of a household or the limits of a town. Community is strongly associated with love. Love is the principal foundation of the Bible, the gospel within it, and the motivation of the God we serve. Becoming more connected to God is important not only for ourselves but for others as well. If we are connected to God, His love will then overflow to how we treat others.

What Does a Connection with God Look Like?

Connection with God looks like inner peace, external service, and complete confidence. In my study on this topic, one word kept coming up, “confidence.”

“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

Hebrew 4:16

Approach God with confidence. God grafted us into the family of God. So, we are to approach our Father with the assurance that He desires to listen to us.

A few practical ways to connect with God include:

Create Space in Your Day to Become More Connected to God

For me, each day looks different. My wake-up times vary, my bedtimes vary, my daily calendar differs day to day. Although I wish all those things were perfectly routine. But the one thing I have control over is my priorities throughout the day. I’ve realized that I could be a couch potato for 90% of the 24 hours we are granted, but as long as I get some type of physical exercise and at least 10 minutes of Bible study, I feel satisfied. So, Bible study and exercise are two priorities. No matter how unpredictable my day is, I try to fit my Bible study in the mornings right after I wake up.

Finding the best time in your routine and not in your schedule helps increase your chances of having your quiet time. Instead of picking a specific time (especially in the mornings) to study, try to choose a particular order of daily events. For example, I wake up, work on my memory verses while listening to music, and then I study my Bible before getting up to eat breakfast. So, before breakfast, I study my Bible.

Memorize Scripture to Keep God in Your Mind and Heart Throughout the Day.

Each month, I pick a few verses to memorize. I’ve learned that this helps me to keep the Bible in my mind throughout the day. It’s surprising how the very scripture you memorize and passages you read come up so frequently throughout the day, week, month, and beyond. The principles echo throughout my actions and words, guiding and instructing me. To read more about what I’ve learned by reading and memorizing the Bible, click here.

Bring God Into Your Day.

We don’t pray to inform Him, as He knows all things. We don’t pray to check off a box or please the part of ourselves tied to tradition. He knows our hearts, and guilt is not the foundation for a relationship.

I was busy checking off my to-do list, being as productive as possible with school, chores, and work. I remember a moment where I was probably ¾ of the way done with my tasks, and I looked down at this laundry basket full of clothes, and I realized I hadn’t talked to God at all that day. Although I had my morning Bible study and quiet time, I suddenly felt guilty for not connecting with God.

Sometimes it takes pausing from the distractions of the day, resetting your mindset, and inviting God into the seemingly mundane daily practices to feel the connection to God we long for.

The Importance of Being Connected to God

Connection sounds simple. It is vital to growing in the Lord and being confident and secure in our life with God. But often, it takes seeking God through the daily distractions, being intentional about building a relationship and setting yourself up for a successful connection with God. This connection to one is the steppingstone to connect with many. Our relationship with God is the defining factor of the health and strength of connection we have with our communities, families, and friends.

  1. Connected with God first thing is like plugging yourself in. I have had to learn that when I make time for God I am more productive it’s like He gives the time back to me somehow. I love that you are figuring this out early.
