Preaching to wolves

Preaching to wolves

“Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the LORD of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.”

Luke 10:2-3 (KJV)

Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary analyzes this passage with the thought that if only more people were willing to share the truth, many more people would find Christ. Just as the laborers are few, so are the missionaries. Just as the harvest is plentiful, so are the unsaved people. I’m not saying drop everything and move to the Amazon; I’m just saying we are called to get the message of Christ out there, and how are the unsaved people going to hear the truth? By some awesome person speaking to them. Romans 10:14 sums it up quite nicely.

“How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?”

Romans 10:14 (KJV)

But never fear, pilgrim! God will never leave us hanging with a mission and not a next step. If you continue to read Luke 10, we discover Christ sends 70 disciples out to preach; and just like the animals on the ark, He sent them two by two.

Matthew Henry’s concise commentary notes this was for the disciples to be strengthened and encouraged by one another’s companionship. I believe having someone to lean on is one of God’s greatest blessings (you know who you are, my buddies!).

The Geneva Study Bible continues this thought that the one who sends them will preserve them. God doesn’t send us out alone. He gives us people to rely on, to encourage and strengthen us; and in turn, we should also lift up and strengthen others on their walk. God also says He will preserve His people.

“If they are diligent to do their duty, He who sent them will also preserve them.”

Geneva Study Bible

This is such a beautiful note because it not only provides the promise that God will bless and keep us in our service to Him, but it also gives a goal to the reader. Be diligent in your duty. Give 100% to your God, and He will preserve you.

Christians are commanded to share the truth with “wolves,” but we aren’t ever alone. We never complete the mission by ourselves or by our own strength. God will encourage and renew us by our choice to rely on Him and by listening to the words of our fellow followers. God will protect us when we do His work for His glory.

My challenge for you today is to ask God for the strength and wisdom required to talk to others, to preach to the wolves as a lamb. Ask Him for faith and guidance and opportunities to speak with His words. Ask for God to show you how to live a righteous life in service to Him so others will see Jesus in you. Ask for Him to teach you to be a lamb among wolves, to walk in meekness and humility with the Lord’s truth on your lips.

Until we meet again,
